Going off with a good feed of grass which they have just cut for their horses

Image by National Library of Scotland
Soldiers gathering fodder, France, during World War I. Two soldiers, identified by their cap badges as men of the Royal Regiment of Artillery, have been cutting grass for their horses. One man is carrying a scythe, a long bladed tool for cutting grass or crops. Many of the soldiers would have come from farms. When they returned after the war those farms were changing, with the increasing use of tractors replacing both horses and men.
